NatWest Bank announces branch closures as usage drops

NatWest has announced the closure of eight branches across Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire as part of its shift towards digital and online banking. The decision comes in light of reduced demand for in-person banking services, with the bank citing a 62% drop in average counter transactions between October 2019 and October 2024. During the same period, the use of mobile apps for banking increased by 53%.

Branch Closures and Dates

Derbyshire:

  • Alfreton and Clay Cross: Closing on 2 June. Both branches have seen a 60% decline in counter transactions since 2019.
  • Allenton Derby: Closing on 13 May.
  • Long Eaton: Closing on 29 May.

Nottinghamshire:

  • Basford: Closing on 21 May.
  • Mansfield: Closing on 26 June, with an average of just 130 personal customers per month.
  • Newark: Closing on 17 June, following a 50% drop in counter transactions over five years.
  • West Bridgford: Closing on 24 June.
  • Worksop: Closing on 18 June.

NatWest’s Statement

A spokesperson for NatWest explained the closures by highlighting the changing nature of banking, emphasizing the growing popularity of digital platforms. They acknowledged that branch closures might affect those less confident with online services but assured customers of ongoing support during the transition.
